This article shows how to upgrade the firmware on an HP Laser Jet 600, M601, M602 and M603 Series Printers.  We will also show you why you may or may not need to upgrade  the firmware in the first place.

“When do I need to upgrade the firmware? “
You might ask.  Upgrading the firmware can correct problems and also add new features to devices without replacing hardware. It depends on the printer and your printers issue.  One of the biggest and most important problems firmware fixes is the 49 error.  As computers progress many times the printers don’t.  The 49 errors are the printers way of telling you there is a communication malfunction. The printer/computer are speaking a different language and can’t understand one another.  There are many other issues that different models have that a firmware update addresses.  I have the list of fixes from HP for the M602 series at the end of this article.

Batch Loading Firmware
If you have a large fleet of laser printers, you do not want to up-grade your whole fleet all at the same time.
The ability to upgrade firmware on multiple devices “simultaneously” is available with “Web Jetadmin” a free application for managing HP printers.  This “batch” process of upgrading your fleets firmware has the well meaning intention of saving you time, but it is possible you could have some failures and that’s not good.  I would definitely do some testing before the actual process and verify the best practices and procedures on test machines.

Here is an example of why you may want to reconsider broadcasting firmware.  On the HP LaserJet P4515 series printer,  using HP’s easy firmware upgrade utility .  If you leave the optional 500 sheet tray(s) on the printer when you send the files, it will brick the tray and the formatter.  To this day I haven’t seen where HP has fixed this.

This is just one example.  My point is, test and verify everything.  I only upgrade the firmware on a unit if it is having a problem that only firmware can fix.    If it’s not broke, don’t fix it. I determine if a printer needs a firmware upgrade on a one on one basis.  Don’t just go willy nilly and start sending global firmware updates!

Future Smart
Hewlett Packard’s new way of upgrading the firmware in their LaserJet enterprise printers and MFPs is “FutureSmart”.  Future Smart firmware is similar to an operating system .  It enables your LaserJet enterprise devices to be upgraded over time, similar to a PC’s operating system with service packs or upgrades.

These maintenance upgrades allow customers to maintain feature stability for their fleet. Service pack updates do not affect existing device features, such as control panel layout and options, while providing important security and regulatory updates or operation fixes. New service pack updates are available multiple times throughout the year.

Major release upgrades
These upgrades allow customers to upgrade their compatible HP FutureSmart devices with the latest features and changes to device functionality. A new major release is easily identifiable with the release number directly following the “HP FutureSmart” name
(for example, HP FutureSmart 3.0).  Major release upgrades are made available to current HP devices when the next generation of HP FutureSmart features is introduced.


Step by Step Instructions for Updating Firmware on the HP Laser Jet Enterprise 600 M601, M602 and M603 Printer.

Method:
Pre-Boot Walk-Up Method (USB)
NOTE: There are five different methods of up-dating this firmware.

IMPORTANT: Please print a configuration page prior to performing any firmware update. 

Retrieve the .bdl file from the HP Support Center 

Select driver language and OS.
Select driver language and OS.

Download the Firmware File Listed

Download the Firmware File and unzip.

NOTE: USB Flash Drives that are not in a Fat32 format or having a CD formatted partition may not be recognized by the printer. You may need to try a different USB flash drive.

Copy this File to your Thumb Drive
Copy the xxxxxxx.bdl file to a portable USB flash memory storage device (thumb drive) in the root directory.

#1.) Turn the Power on.

Press the Stop button when the Ready, Data and Attention LEDs illuminate solid.

Press the Down button to highlight Administrator, and then press OK.

 Press the Down button to highlight Download, and then press OK.Insert the portable USB storage device with the xxxxxxx.bdl file on it. NOTE: If the message No USB Thumbdrive files found on the control panel display, you may need to use a different USB storage accessory or place the firmware file in the root directory.What is the Root Directory on a Thumbdrive?If you open the thumb drive (Removable Disk "E"or what ever yours might be) This is the root directory and it is where you will place the .xxxxxxx.bdl file.
#4.) Press the Down button to highlight Download, and then press OK. Insert the portable USB storage device with the xxxxxxx.bdl file on it.
Press the Down button to highlight the xxxxxxx.bdl file, and then press OK. NOTE: If you have more than one .bdl file on your USB Thumb drive, select the file you want loaded and press OK.
#5.) Press the Down button to highlight USB Thumbdrive, and then press OK. NOTE: If the message No USB Thumb drive files found on the control panel display, you may need to use a different USB storage accessory or place the firmware file in the root directory.

What is the Root Directory on a Thumb drive?
If you open the thumb drive (Removable Disk “E”or what ever Letter is asighned) This is the root directory and it is where you will place the .xxxxxxx.bdl file.

Press the Down button to highlight the xxxxxxx.bdl file, and then press OK.

IMPORTANT: Please be patient since this may take up to 10 minutes to reboot. You may cause damage to the machine if you interrupt or turn the power off before the firmware completes.

#7.) When the message Complete appears on the control panel display, press the Back button 3 times. When the message Continue appears on the control panel display, press OK. he printer will continue to boot to the Ready state. fter the printer or MFP is back online, print a Configuration Page and verify that the new firmware has been installed.#7.)   • Added backwards compatibility of PDL commands to control source input trays with all PDLs.

  • The user can enable/disable 10 User Defined Media Types via SNMP, Web JetAdmin or EWS. The user can assign a print mode to the User Defined Media types. The user can create their own customized name for the User Defined Media Types.

  • The UI constrains the displaying of User Defined Media Types based on whether the SNMP OID has been enabled or disabled. When disabled, the specific User Defined type is not listed in the Adjust Paper Type menu. When enabled, the specific User Defined Media Type is displayed in the Adjust Paper Type menu.

  • Unsupported USB device messages are now able to be hidden.

  • The signed in Username will now be visible from most control panel screens.

Interpret control-panel messages

Control-panel message types – Four types of control-panel messages can indicate the status of or problems with the product.

Message type Description – Status messages Status messages reflect the current state of the product. They inform you of normal product operation and require no interaction to clear them. They change as the state of the product changes. Whenever the product is ready, not busy, and has no pending warning messages, the status message Ready appears if the product is online.

Warning messages – Warning messages inform you of data and print errors. These messages typically alternate with the Ready or status messages and remain until OK is pressed. Some warning messages are clearable.  If CLEARABLE WARNINGS is set to JOB on the product CONFIGURE DEVICE menu, the next print job clears these messages.

Error messages – Error messages communicate that some action must be performed, such as adding paper or clearing a jam.  Some error messages are auto-continuable. If AUTO-CONTINUE is set on the menus, the product will continue normal operation after an auto-continuable error message appears for 10 seconds.

NOTE: Pressing any button during the 10-second auto-continuable error message overrides the auto-continue feature, and the button function takes precedence. For example, pressing the stop button pauses printing and offers the option to cancel the print job.

Critical-error messages – Critical error messages inform you of a product failure. Some of these messages can be cleared by turning the product off and then on. These messages are not affected by the AUTO-CONTINUE setting. If a critical error persists, service is required.

Whenever the product is turned off and then turned on again, set the time and date at the control panel. See System setup menu on page 329.  If the error persists, you might need to replace the formatter.

A jam has occurred in the fuser area. CAUTION: The fuser can be hot while the
product is in use. Wait for the fuser to cool before handling it.  For instructions on clearing the jam, see Clear jams in the right door on page 387.

To continue press OK  The product received more data than can fit in the available memory. You might have tried to transfer too many macros, soft fonts, or complex graphics.  Press the OK button to print the transferred data (some data might be lost), and then simplify the print job or install additional memory.

21.X INSUFFICIENT MEMORY TO LOAD FONTS/DATA
Insufficient memory to process the print job. Install additional memory in the product.

22 EIO X BUFFER OVERFLOW
To continue press OK  Too much data was sent to the EIO card in the specified slot (x). An incorrect communications protocol might be in use.  Press the OK button to print the transferred data. (Some data might be lost.)  Check the host configuration.

22 EMBEDDED I/O BUFFER OVERFLOW
To continue press OK  Too much data was sent to the embedded HP Jetdirect print server.  Press the OK button to print the transferred data. (Some data might be lost.)  Check the host configuration.

22 PARALLEL I/O BUFFER OVERFLOW
To continue press OK  The product’s parallel buffer has overflowed. Press the OK button to print the transferred data. (Some data might be lost.)  Check the host configuration.

22 PARALLEL SERIAL BUFFER OVERFLOW

41.3 UNEXPECTED SIZE IN TRAY <X> LOAD TRAY <X> [TYPE] [SIZE]
To use another tray press OK  This message appears even though the tray is loaded with the correct paper size.
1. Run the sensor test in the sensor monitor mode to verify that the cassette media size switch is functioning properly.
2. Reconnect the cassette media size switch intermediate connector J57, and connector J107 on the DC controller PCA.
3. Replace the lifter assembly.

41.5 UNEXPECTED TYPE IN TRAY <X>LOAD TRAY <X> [TYPE] [SIZE]
To use another tray press OK  This message appears even though the tray is loaded with the correct paper size.
1. Reconnect the media sensor intermediate connector J77, and connector J131 on the DC controller PCA.
2. Replace the registration assembly.

41.7 ERROR
To continue press OK  Printer error
X = 2; beam detected misprint
X = 7; media transport error
Turn the product off, and then on.

48.01 TRANSFER UNIT ERROR
The transfer belt has dislocated during printing.  Turn product off then on.  If the message persists, remove and reinstall the transfer unit.

49.XXXX ERROR
To continue turn off then on  A firmware error has occurred. This error can be caused by corrupted print jobs, software applications issues, non-product specific printer drivers, poor-quality USB or network cables, bad network connections or incorrect configurations, invalid firmware operations, or unsupported accessories.
1. Turn the product off and then on.
2. If the error returns, check the following items:The error might be caused by a network connectivity problem, such as a bad interface cable, a bad USB port, or an invalid network configuration setting.
The error might be caused by the print job, such as an invalid printer driver, a problem with the software application, or a problem with the file you are printing.
Upgrading the product firmware might help resolve the error. See the product user guide for more information.

50.1 FUSER ERROR
Low fuser temperature. Remove the fuser and any residual paper. 
Check connector J50 between the fuser and the product. If either is damaged, replace the connector or fuser. See Fuser on page 85.

50.2 FUSER ERROR
Fuser warm-up failure
1. Reinstall the fuser.
2. Check the connector J50 between the fuser and the product. If either is damaged, replace the connector or fuser. See Fuser on page 85.
3. Reconnect the connectors J160 and J162 on the DC controller PCA and connector J25 on the power line between the low voltage power supply and fuser.
4. Replace the wire harness that connects the fuser.
5. Replace the fuser. See Fuser on page 85.
6. If the error persists, replace the low-voltage power supply. See Low-voltage power supply (LVPS) on page 157.

50.3 FUSER ERROR
High fuser temperature Reinstall the fuser. Check connector J50
between the fuser and the product. If either is damaged, replace the connector or fuser. See Fuser on page 85.  If the error persists, replace the low-voltage power supply. See Low-voltage power supply (LVPS) on page 157.

50.4 FUSER ERROR
Drive circuit fault
1. Check the power source. Make sure the
power source meets product requirements.
2. Reconnect the connector J150 on the DC controller PCA.
3. If the message persists, replace the low-voltage power supply. See Low-voltage power supply (LVPS) on page 157.

50.5 FUSER ERROR
The incorrect fuser was installed.
CAUTION: The fuser can be hot while the
product is in use. Wait for the fuser to cool before handling it.
1. Open the right door.
2. Remove the incompatible fuser.
3. Install the correct fuser.
4. Close the right door.

50.7 FUSER ERROR
Fuser pressure-release mechanism failure
1. Reconnect the fuser-pressure release
sensor intermediate connector J60, and connector J128 on the DC controller PCA.
2. Run the sensor test in the sensor monitor mode to verify that the fuser pressure-release sensor is functioning properly. If it is not, replace the fuser pressure-release sensor.
3. Check the fuser pressure-release sensor flag. If it is damaged, replace the fuser.
4. Run the fuser pressure-release drive test in actuator drive mode to verify that the fuser motor is functioning properly.  If it is not, replace the fuser motor. See Fuser motor on page 200.
5. If the message persists, replace the fuser. See Fuser on page 85.

50.8 FUSER ERROR
Low fuser temperature. Remove the fuser and any residual paper.
Check connector J50 between the fuser and the product. If either is damaged, replace the connector or fuser. See Fuser on page 85.

50.9 FUSER ERROR
High fuser temperature. Reinstall the fuser. Check the connector J50
between the fuser and the product. If either is damaged, replace the connector or fuser. See Fuser on page 85.  If the error persists, replace the low-voltage power supply. See Low-voltage power supply (LVPS) on page 157.

50.X FUSER ERROR
A fuser error has occurred. Make sure you have the correct fuser. Reseat
the fuser. Turn the product off, and then turn the product on.

51.XY ERROR

If the message persists, replace the appropriate laser/scanner assembly. See Laser/scanner assembly (Y/M) on page 186 or Laser/scanner assembly (C/Bk) on page 190.
52.20 ERROR: If the laser/scanner assembly (Y/M) does not rotate, reconnect connector J71 on the laser driver PCA and connector J112 on the DC controller PCA. If the laser/scanner assembly (C/Bk) does not rotate, reconnect connector J72 on the laser driver PCA and connector J112 on the DC controller PCA. If the message persists, replace the appropriate laser/ scanner assembly. See Laser/scanner assembly (Y/M) on page 186 or Laser/scanner assembly (C/Bk) on page 190.

54.XX ERROR
To continue turn off then on Error requires that the product be turned off then on.  Turn the product off, and then turn the product on.

55.XX.YY DC CONTROLLER ERROR
To continue turn off then on The print engine is not communicating with the formatter (XX = 01; DC controller memory error).  Turn the product off, and then turn the product on.  If the error persists, replace the DC controller PCA. See DC controller PCA only on page 155.

56.X ERROR
To continue turn off then on A temporary printing error has occurred
(XX
= 01; illegal input).
Turn the product off, and then turn the product on.

57.03 ERROR
To continue turn off then on Cartridge fan (FM2) is defective.
1. Reconnect the cartridge fan connector
J65, connector J263 on the high-voltage power supply lower, and connector J114 on the DC controller PCA.
2. Turn the product off, and then on.  Measure the voltage between connectors J263-16 and J263-18 on the high-voltage power supply lower immediately after the product is turned on. If the voltage changes from 0 V to approximately 24 V, replace the cartridge fan. See Cartridge fan and environmental sensor on page 137.

57.04 ERROR
To continue turn off then on Power-supply fan (FM1) is defective.
1. Reconnect the cartridge fan connector
J153 on the DC controller PCA.
2. Turn the product off, and then on.  Measure the voltage between connectors J153-1 and J153-3 on DC controller PCA immediately after the product is turned on. If the voltage changes from 0 V to approximately 24V, replace the power-supply fan. See Power-supply fan on page 152.

57.06 ERROR
To continue turn off then on Exhaust fan (FM4) is defective.
1. Reconnect the cartridge fan connector
J79, connector J264 on the high-voltage power supply lower, and connector J114 on the DC controller PCA.
2. Turn the product off, and then on.  Measure the voltage between connectors J264-1 and J264-3 on the high-voltage power supply lower immediately after the product is turned on. If the voltage changes from 0 V to approximately 24 V, replace the exhaust fan. See Exhaust fan and fan duct on page 169.

57.XX ERROR
To continue turn off then on A temporary printing error has occurred. Turn the product off, and then turn the product on.

58.XX ERROR
To continue turn off then on A temporary printing error has occurred.
58.03 ERROR: DC controller PCA is defective.
58.04 ERROR: Low-voltage power supply is defective.
58.03 ERROR: Turn the product off, and then turn the product on. If the message persists, replace the DC controller PCA.  See DC controller PCA and tray on page 161.

Reconnect the

Motor rotation error. Perform the motor component tests in the
DIAGNOSTICS menu.

Fuser motor startup error Reconnect the connector J13 of the fuser
motor and the connector J123 on the DC controller PCA. Perform the fuser motor component test in the DIAGNOSTICS menu.  If the message persists, replace the fuser motor. See Fuser motor on page 200.

59.40 ERROR
Fuser motor rotation error Perform the fuser motor component test in
the DIAGNOSTICS menu. If the message persists, replace the fuser motor. See Fuser motor on page 200.

59.50 ERROR
Black image drum motor startup error Reconnect the connector J15 of the black
drum motor and the connector J121 on the DC controller PCA. Perform the drum-motors component test in the DIAGNOSTICS menu.  If the message persists, replace the black drum motor. See Yellow, magenta, cyan, and black drum motors on page 199.

59.51 ERROR
Cyan image drum motor startup error Reconnect the connector J16 of the cyan
drum motor and the connector J121 on the DC controller PCA. Perform the drum-motors component test in the DIAGNOSTICS menu.  If the message persists, replace the cyan drum motor. See Yellow, magenta, cyan, and black drum motors on page 199.

59.52 ERROR
Magenta image drum motor startup error Reconnect the connector J17 of the magenta
drum motor and the connector J120 on the DC controller PCA. Perform the drum-motors component test in the DIAGNOSTICS menu.  If the message persists, replace the magenta drum motor. See Yellow, magenta, cyan, and black drum motors on page 199.

59.53 ERROR
Yellow image drum motor startup error Reconnect the connector J18 of the yellow
drum motor and the connector J120 on the DC controller PCA. Perform the drum-motors component test in the DIAGNOSTICS menu.  If the message persists, replace the yellow drum motor. See Yellow, magenta, cyan, and black drum motors on page 199.

ITB motor startup error Reconnect the connector J14 of the ITB
motor and the connector J140 on the DC controller PCA. Perform the ITB motor drive component test to verify that the ITB motor is functioning properly. If the message persists, replace the ITB motor. See ITB motor on page 202.

59.A0 ERROR
ITB motor rotation error. Use the component test to activate the ITB
motor. If the motor does not function, replace the motor. See ITB motor on page 202.

CLEANING MOTOR ERROR
REPLACE TONER COLLECTION UNIT
The residual-toner feed motor has failed.
1. Check the toner collection unit. If the unit
is full, replace it.
NOTE: Toner can clog the feed motor if the toner collection unit is full.
2. Reconnect the residual-toner feed motor connector J63 and connector J155 on the DC controller PCA.
3. Replace the residual-toner feed motor.  See Residual-toner-feed motor on page 133.

59.C0 ERROR
Developer alienation motor rotation error 1. Reconnect intermediate connector J87
of the developing disengagement sensor, connector J112 on the DC controller PCA, connector J38 of the developing disengagement motor, and the connector J261 on the high-voltage power supply D PCA.
2. Run the sensor test in the sensor monitor mode to verify that the developing disengagement sensor is functioning properly. If it is not, replace the main-drive assembly. See Main-drive assembly on page 203.
3. Run the developing unit disengagement drive test to verify that the disengagement mechanism is functioning properly. If it is not, replace the developing disengagement motor.  See Developing-disengagement motor on page 168.

59.F0 ERROR
Transfer alienation failure
1. Verify that the ITB is installed.
2. Reconnect the primary-transfer disengagement sensor J19, and connector J128 on the DC controller PCA .
3. Run the sensor test in the sensor monitor mode to verify that the primary transfer disengagement sensor is functioning properly. If not, replace the primary transfer disengagement sensor.
4. Perform the alienation drive component test in the DIAGNOSTICS menu. If not, replace the fuser motor. See Fuser motor on page 200.

60.02 ERROR
Tray 2 is not lifting correctly. 1. Reconnect connector J115 on the DC
controller PCA and the intermediate connector J58.
2. Run the sensor test in sensor monitor mode to verify that the cassette media stack surface sensor is functioning properly. If it is not, replace the pickup assembly. See Tray-pickup drive assembly on page 178.
3. Reconnect connector J56 of the lifter motor. Also check J107 on the DC controller PCA.
4. If the message persists, replace the lifter drive assembly. See Lifter-drive assembly on page 173.

60.03 ERROR
Tray 3 is not lifting correctly. 1. Reconnect connector J408 on the paper
deck controller PCA and the intermediate connector J11.
2. Run the sensor test in sensor monitor mode to verify that the cassette media stack surface sensor is functioning properly. If it is not, replace the pickup assembly. See Pickup assembly (optional paper feeder) on page 226.
3. Reconnect connector J15 of the lifter motor. Also check J407 on the paper deck controller PCA.
4. If the message persists, replace the lifter drive assembly. See Lifter-drive assembly (optional paper feeder) on page 230.

60.04 ERROR
Tray 4 is not lifting correctly.
1. Reconnect connector J406 on the paper
deck controller PCA and the intermediate connector J21.
2. Run the sensor test in sensor monitor mode to verify that the cassette media stack surface sensor is functioning properly. If it is not, replace the pickup assembly. See Pickup assembly (optional paper feeder) on page 226.
3. Reconnect connector J24 of the lifter motor. Also check J405 on the paper deck controller PCA.
4. If the message persists, replace the lifter drive assembly. See Lifter-drive assembly (optional paper feeder) on page 230.

60.05 ERROR
Tray 5 is not lifting correctly. 1. Reconnect the connector J403 on the
paper deck controller PCA and the intermediate connector J31.
2. Run the sensor test in the sensor monitor mode to verify that the PD cassette media stack surface sensor is functioning properly. If it is not, replace the middle pickup assembly. See Pickup assembly (optional paper feeder) on page 226.
3. Reconnect the connector J34 of the lifter motor and the connector. Also check J402 on the paper deck controller PCA.  4. If the message persists, replace the lifter drive assembly. See Lifter-drive assembly (optional paper feeder) on page 230.

62 NO SYSTEM
To continue turn off then on  The product has an internal problem. Turn the product off and then on.

68.X PERMANENT STORAGE FULL
To continue press OK  The product NVRAM is full. Some settings saved in the NVRAM might have been reset to the factory defaults. Printing can continue, but some unexpected functions might occur if an error occurred in permanent storage.

Symptoms of a Bad Fuser

What is a Fuser Assembly?                                fuser rollers
The fuser assembly is the part in a Copier, Laser printer or Laser Fax Machine that fuses the toner to the paper.  Toner is made of crushed plastic and carbon black for color.  Once the image is transferred to the paper you need to fuse (melt) it into the paper.  If you have ever stopped the paper before it goes through the fuser you would find that the toner will come right off.  It needs to be fused.  There are two important steps to fusing and those are…

  1. Heat;  Heat is applied to a teflon or non-stick upper roller or sleeve/film with halogen lamps or a heater element.
  2. Pressure;  Pressure is used for fusing toner to the paper with a pressure or lower roller.  They use heavy springs on the front and rear side that press the lower roller to the upper roller or film to aid in fusing.

Ghosting, double images, streaking, black lines  and smudges; also Jamming are Symptoms of a Bad Fuser
These marks are often on the top and bottom of the pages.  These symptoms are caused from the teflon material on the upper roller or film being worn off, ripped or scored.  The solution is to replace the fuser as an assembly or replace the worn roller or film parts.

Error code;  If a problem exists indicating a fuser problem it will stop the machine from operating and give an error code.  The codes are all different for each make and model.  There are three major items that go bad on a fuser assembly that would give an error code.

  1. The lamp or the heater element is bad
  2. The thermal fuse is bad.
  3. The thermistor is bad.  (temperature sensing device)

There are a few other problems you may encounter with a fuser such as; Broken gears, bad lower roller, jamming (this is most likely a bad roller)

Wrinkling/Wrinkles in the Paper
This can be caused by a dirty fuser entrance guide.  If the toner builds up in a certain area on the entrance guide it will cause the paper to skew or go into the rollers at a bad angle.  This can also cause jamming.  The lower roller can also cause wrinkling in the paper when the rubber that is attached to the metal roller inside becomes separated.

Separator Fingers; These scrape or separate the paper off of the roller because the paper tends to stick to the upper roller and needs help to seperate it off of the roller.  (that  is why they use a Teflon material on the upper roller/fim) These scrapers build up with toner, wear down and break causing jamming.  Accordion jams are one of the types of  jams you would get in the fuser.  It folds up the paper in an accordion because the paper can’t get past the fuser.

Testing Paper Feed Solenoids.

Many people who repair their own HP printers change the feed rollers and continue getting jams and decide to call it quits at that point.  They cant understand why it’s still jamming.   The problem more than likely is the Paper Feed Solenoids.  Look in the event log.  You will see 13.98, 13.02, 13.03 errors if the solenoids are having issues.

It’s a hassle to have to pull all the covers off just to see if the paper feed solenoid needs to be replaced.  Here’s a way to test them so you don’t have to.  This test applies to  Hewlett Packard Laser Jets 4200, 4300, 4240, 4250, 4350, P4014,  P4015,  P4515 and many others.

Go into “Diagnostics” and “Paper Path” Test Mode.
Set it for 10 prints, single sided and select the tray that you would like to test.
Pay close attention  to the sound, speed and rhythm of the machines operation.
If the solenoid is good you will hear the same rhythm and operation through out the test.  But,  if there is an issue with the solenoid you will notice a pause.   It will “hiccup” and pause just for a moment, then continue.  If it is really bad, it may end up jamming or become obvious that the foam is totally destroyed.
You will become acquainted with this and be able to quickly tell if there is a problem.  If you don’t do it that often you may have to pull the solenoids off to test them.  It’s very subtle but if you do it enough you’ll be able to spot it right off.

Look at the following Video below. I am testing tray 2 and tray 3 on a Hewlett Packard Laser Jet 4250.  First is tray 2 with no problem ( Just Changed it) and next is tray 3 with an obvious problem with the solenoid.

Remove the Solenoid and do a visual inspection.

3 Must Do Repairs on HP Laser Printers

These 3 little items can cause huge problems.  They are the cause of jamming, registration skew,  13.98, 13.02, 13.03, 13.05, 13.06 error codes and they will also cause other issues that will leave you scratching your head.  If, while your doing a maintenance or general cleaning, do yourself a favor and add this to your list of preventative maintenance.

#1.) Inspect the Paper Full Sensor Flags Located on the Delivery Assembly.

Test the levers by pushing down on the levers and pull back on them.  You’ll will feel it sticking if the foam is deteriorated.

Removing foam.
Remove the Top Cover.
Turn the cover upside down and remove 2 screws and the grounding plate.
If the foam has become deteriorated, scrape the old foam off of the Paper Full sensor flag assembly, and remove leftover foam and glue with alcohol.
There are two locations on the assembly for you to remove foam from.
See pictures below.

NOTE: It is not necessary to reinstall new foam.

#2.) Inspect Registration Shutter on the Registration Assembly.

Remove the toner cartridge and pull/push on the Registration Shutter so that it is all the way open and see if it is sticking.
See pictures/video below.
If the foam has become deteriorated simply remove it by scraping it off with a knife and then remove leftover foam and glue with alcohol.
NOTE: It is not necessary to reinstall new foam.

How to Fix 13.02, 13.03 and 13.98 Error Codes on HP Laser Printers

If your HP Laser printer is frequently Jamming, take a look in the Error Log.  If you see these errors you more than likely have a bad paper feed solenoid.  If you have more than one tray having jamming issues, the paper feed solenoid could be bad in that assembly also.

This article is really about Hewlett Packard’s Infamous Feed Solenoids. There are many part numbers for the same part, but most Hewlett Packard Laser Printers use a paper feed solenoid similar to part number RK2-0269.  This Part number is technically for the LaserJet 4200/4300/4250/4350 series printer, but will work in many others. The problem with these is that the material that HP chose is CRAP! Time and usage makes the foam on the solenoid plunger plate stick. The material loses is sponginess and becomes like glue. This causes the Solenoid to stick as it feeds and the feed roller will push an extra sheet of paper  into the machine. ( Sensors  know that this is wrong) and thus causing the errors to occur. Errors 13.02, 13.03 and 13.98. If I see these ERRORS when I print and Review the Error Log, I know That RK2-0269 is causing the issue.

Replacing Tray 2 Paper Feed Solenoid for 13.02 Jams P4515 Series

Replacing Tray 2 Paper Feed Solenoid for 13.02 Jams 4250 Series

Installing these is fairly easy for anyone with mechanical aptitude and a Phillips number two screwdriver.

Note:It is not necessary to remove the Fuser Assembly or the Toner Cartridge.

Step 1.) Begin by removing all Optional Equipment.
Step 2.) Paper Tray 2
Step 3.) Remove Tray 2 extension door /Paper Tray Dust Cover.
a.) Carefully flex the Tray 2 extension door to release the hinge pin near the power cord side of the product.
b.) Rotate the Tray 2 extension door to the horizontal position, and then pull up on the keyed hinge pin to release the door.
Step 4.) Swing open the rear output bin.
Step 5.) Remove the top-accessory cover if stacker is not installed. Lift the top-accessory cover up and off the product.
Step 6.) Remove Formatter Assembly.
Remove 2 screws or 2 thumb screws and grasp the formatter cage and then slide it away from the machine to remove it.
NOTE: When you reinstall the formatter cage, open the formatter-cage door before you fully seat the formatter cage, and verify that the formatter PCA connector is aligned with the connector on the product chassis.
Step 8.) Remove the Top cover
a.) 4 screws… 2 under the top-accessory cover and 2 under the toner cartridge cover.
b.) Use needle-nose pliers to release the print-cartridge drive-arm tab

CAUTION: The accessory pin (located in the left-rear corner of the cover) is not captive.  Grasp the rear side of the cover and the lid of the cover then lift up and off of the machine. Make sure that the Toner Cartridge Drive Arm is down (Engaged) so that it is out of the way.

Step 9.) Remove the Right Side Cover.
NOTE: When reinstalling the cover make sure that the power switch connecting Rod goes in between the on/off switch Lever guide inside the cover.

Step 10.) Swing the power switch lever out of the way

Step 11.) Remove the wiring (2 pin connector) Remove the screw holding the Paper Feed Solenoid on the machine. Remove the solenoid and replace it with a new Solenoid. Put everything back in reverse order. You’re done!

Quality Issues

Solving Image Problems on HP Laser Printers

There are several image related problems that can occur. If you want to save money and repair it yourself this article is for you. Read about the most common image related problems that HP Laser Printers have and how to resolve them.

Here are a few examples of image related problems:

Blank, Solid Black, Streaks, Double Images, Specks, Lines, Light Print, Dark Print, Blurred Image, Flaking / Rubs off

Cartridges: Most of these problems are related to the toner cartridge. If you don’t have another cartridge to test it you can diagnose the problem another way. Put a sheet of paper in tray 1. Run a configuration page with your hand on the power switch. When the page reaches midway, turn the power off. You may have to do this a couple more times to get the timing correct. Now that you have stopped the paper midway, carefully remove the cartridge and the paper from the machine. Inspect it to see if the problem exists before it reached the fuser. If it does then it is in the cartridge, or possibly it could be in the Laser or scanner assembly. If it does not, then you have a bad fuser assembly. Remove the fuser and inspect it.

Cartridge problems are the most common cause of image related problems. I find more problems with remanufactured cartridges because the manufacturer is not replacing certain major components that cause the defects. Make sure they replace the drum. Also, look for companies that are ISO 9002/14001 certified and STMC certified. This will help weed out the undesirable cartridges. To be honest, I have seen a lot of OEM cartridges fail. Cartridges fail for several reasons, such as foreign objects getting up into the cartridge causing lines, streaks and leaking. This can be resolved by being careful not to remove staple or paper clips in and around machine. You should also have your machine cleaned. Vacuuming all of the paper and toner dust can help decrease this. Remember to only use a service vacuum that can handle the tiny particle size of toner.
Printing a Configuration page: You will always need to print a configuration page, and here are some reasons.

Image quality test, Page count, Serial number of machine, Configuration of printer, The last few errors, Jet Direct print server card is installed, Many others…

Here are a few directions on how to print out a configuration page.
If you don’t see your model scroll through the menu on your printer and it should be easy to find.

HP LJ-4000/4050/4100
1 Press [Menu] until INFORMATION MENU appears.
2 Press [Item] until PRINT CONFIGURATION appears.
3 Press [Select] to print the Configuration Page.

HP LJ-4200/4250/4300/4350
1 Press (SELECT button) or the MENU button to open the menus.
2 Use (UP ARROW button) or (DOWN ARROW button) to scroll to INFORMATION, and then press the Check button (Select)
3 Use or to scroll to PRINT CONFIGURATION, and then press the check button.

HP LJ-8000/8100/8150
1 Press MENU until INFORMATION MENU appears.
2 Press ITEM until PRINT CONFIGURATION appears.
3 Press SELECT to print the configuration pages.

Image problems caused by the Fuser Assembly: Symptoms are, toner not fusing, streaking, double imaging.

Note: The 4200 series had a problem with the film getting ripped. You will see strands of plastic pieces coming out of the exit area. It will cause as an image defect, streaking and double imaging.

Diagnose: You can diagnose it by running a configuration page. Rub on the print. Is it flakey? Does the print rub off easy? If it does, it is probably the fuser. Remove and inspect it. You can inspect the film or roller. If you see any damage replacement is necessary.

Note: Most fusers on HP Laser Printers are very easy to remove. If you need instructions on how to remove and install them, I have maintenance kit installation procedures on my website on the front page. Look under customer menus.

Solution – The fuser is replaced as an assembly. Remove and replace Fuser Assembly
WARNING! Let the Fuser Assembly cool before disassembly.

Regarding Light Prints:
If you have replaced your cartridge and you still have light prints or if you have light print over the entire page, you may have economy mode on. Go to quality menu and turn off. I would also try the transfer roller. This is also easy to replace, look in Maintenance kit installation procedure.

One last thing: If you have tried all of the above, there could be another problem. This procedure can be difficult for the average person to repair. It is cleaning the scanner or laser unit. If you are in a very dusty environment the mirror inside this assembly may be dirty. When the mirrors accumulate dust on them the image defect is light prints. The problem with these is that the material that HP chose is CRAP! Time and usage makes the foam on the solenoid plunger plate stick. The material loses is sponginess and becomes like glue. This causes the Solenoid to stick as it feeds and the feed roller will push an extra sheet of paper  into the machine. ( Sensors  know that this is wrong) and thus causing the errors to occur. Errors 13.02, 13.03 and 13.98. If I see these ERRORS when I print and Review the Error Log, I know That RK2-0269 is causing the issue.  I have videos on replacing the solenoids just go to my video page and look for what you need.

HP LaserJet 4250 Replacing Tray 2 Paper Feed Solenoid for 13.02 Jams

Installing these is fairly easy for anyone with mechanical aptitude and a Phillips number two screwdriver.
Note:It is not necessary to remove the Fuser Assembly or the Toner Cartridge.

Step 1.) Begin by removing all Optional Equipment.
Step 2.) Paper Tray 2
Step 3.) Remove Tray 2 extension door /Paper Tray Dust Cover.
a.) Carefully flex the Tray 2 extension door to release the hinge pin near the power cord side of the product.
b.) Rotate the Tray 2 extension door to the horizontal position, and then pull up on the keyed hinge pin to release the door.
Step 4.) Swing open the rear output bin.
Step 5.) Remove the top-accessory cover if stacker is not installed. Lift the top-accessory cover up and off the product.
Step 6.) Remove Formatter Assembly.
Remove 2 screws or 2 thumb screws and grasp the formatter cage and then slide it away from the machine to remove it.
NOTE: When you reinstall the formatter cage, open the formatter-cage door before you fully seat the formatter cage, and verify that the formatter PCA connector is aligned with the connector on the product chassis.
Step 8.) Remove the Top cover
a.) 4 screws… 2 under the top-accessory cover and 2 under the toner cartridge cover.
b.) Use needle-nose pliers to release the print-cartridge drive-arm tab

CAUTION: The accessory pin (located in the left-rear corner of the cover) is not captive.  Grasp the rear side of the cover and the lid of the cover then lift up and off of the machine. Make sure that the Toner Cartridge Drive Arm is down (Engaged) so that it is out of the way.

Step 9.) Remove the Right Side Cover.
NOTE: When reinstalling the cover make sure that the power switch connecting Rod goes in between the on/off switch Lever guide inside the cover.

Step 10.) Swing the power switch lever out of the way

Step 11.) Remove the wiring (2 pin connector) Remove the screw holding the Paper Feed Solenoid on the machine. Remove the solenoid and replace it with a new Solenoid. Put everything back in reverse order. You’re done!
